Fatal Crash on Southbound I-25

Fatal Crash on Southbound I-25

Colorado State Patrol is investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Interstate 25 near milepost 134.5.  This location is about three miles south of the Colorado Springs city limits.

A 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 28-year-old Shara Cardenas, of Colorado Springs, was southbound on Interstate 25 in the left hand lane.  The vehicle drifted onto the left shoulder and the front left of the car collided with the metal guardrail.  The driver steered abruptly to the right and the vehicle rotated clockwise.  The Malibu traveled across both of the southbound lanes and continued off the right side of the road.  The front left of the Malibu collided with the grassy hillside causing the vehicle to rollover one complete time.  The Malibu came to rest near the top of the hill, on its wheels, facing southwest.

During the crash, Mrs. Cardenas, who was not wearing her seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle.  Due to the injuries sustained in the crash, she was pronounced deceased on scene.  A three-year-old child, who was properly restrained in a forward facing child safety seat, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.

The next-of-kin has been notified.

Please use your seat belt.
