COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife is inviting the local community and state parks enthusiasts to help celebrate Cheyenne Mountain State Park’s 10th anniversary by participating in an Adventure Race, happening June 18.
The race gets underway at 9:30 a.m. and is designed to lead teams through different nature or recreation-based stations located throughout the park. At each station, participants will need to complete a fun activity or challenge before racing off to the next checkpoint. The race is divided into three categories. The family division will race to four stations, the team division has six stations and the corporate division has 8 stations. Being a stellar athlete is not required though participants should bring a water bottle and the ability to have fun. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers; as well as for best group and individual costumes. The goal is to make this adventure race an annual event.
Other activities, such as hikes, crafts and games, will be available from noon to 4 p.m. for those who do not want to race.
Cheyenne Mountain State Park opened for visitors in 2006 after a partnership between CPW, the City of Colorado Springs, great Outdoors Colorado and El Paso County acquired the land, formerly known as JL Ranch, in June of 2000.
The park includes: 18 trails, totaling 22 miles; 61 campsites; 41 picnic sites; a group picnic area; wildlife watching; interpretive programs; and a world-class archery range,” said Park Manager Mitch Martin.
In its short 10 years, the 2700-acre park has served countless visitors, and has been a significant tourism draw for the area. Martin said plans are in the works to grow the park by 200 more acres, which will provide more trails for hiking, as well as potentially some new outdoor recreation opportunities.
“We are excited to see what the next ten years bring to the park as we continue to expand the park through our partnership with the city,” he said.
