Colorado Springs is home to the first full recycling sorting center in southern Colorado with the recent opening of Bestway Recycling’s material recovery facility. Be one of the first to see how the aluminum, cardboard, paper, plastics and glass put into recycle containers at home and work are separated to be reprocessed into new goods at this lunch-n-learn event on Wednesday August 15, 2012. The separation uses a process of giant chain belts, sort lines, separators and screens.
Bestway Disposal’s customers divert tons of recyclable materials from the landfill each week. This has made it possible for Bestway to employ the 20 people needed to staff the new facility, which has an overall $2M estimated economic impact per year.
The lunch-n-learn runs over the noon lunch hour, from 12:11 to 12: 49 p.m., at 4005 Interpark Drive, Colorado Springs. Close-toed shoes are required. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunches to enjoy during a presentation before the tour begins. Those who attend have the opportunity to win a door prize tote bag made from reused City banners.
Each month, the City Office of Innovation and Sustainability sponsors a lunch-n-learn topic on an environmental issue. Questions? Contact City of Colorado Springs Sustainability Coordinator Carrie McCausland, 719-385-CSGN (2746) or cmccausland@springsgov.com.
