Tanker-Trailer Transporting Butane Crashes Near Colorado City

PUEBLO COUNTY – At about 6:45 this morning, Colorado State Patrol’s Pueblo Regional Communication Center was notified that a semi hauling butane had crashed on I25 at Mile Post 76, near Colorado City, Colorado. Initial reports were that the semi had rolled and exploded.

The semi did not explode, but had rolled, and its cab had burst into flames. Rye Fire Department responded to the crash and contained the fire. The driver of the semi was transported with unknown injuries.

An evaluation of the tanker determined that there may be a structural issue with the vehicle container which requires removal of the butane prior to towing the semi-tractor and trailer. As a result, north and southbound I25 remain closed at Mile Post 77. I25 will be closed for approximately five hours for the unloading and safe removal of the vehicles.

Traffic is being diverted by CDOT as well as on-scene law enforcement.

Alternate Route:

If heading southbound, at Pueblo go east on Highway 50 to La Junta, then west on Highway 10 to Walsenburg and continue south on I25.
