Colorado Springs remembers the September 11 victims on this ten year anniversary of the attack on the United States with special events and memorials located in the Colorado Springs community.
Visit the memorial at Fort Carson located near the gate off Hwy 115 across from Cheyenne Mountain State Park. A twisted 17 foot long steel beam once part of the Twin Towers reminds us of the day two planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia and a fourth plane that passengers prevented from reaching its target in Washington D.C.
The plaque at the base of the Memorial reads:
“This steel beam once stood
at the World Trade Center in New
York City, Tall and Proud with others
like it. Now it stands here, tarnished
and bent, but unbroken.
It is a vivid reminder that there are
people in this world who would do us
harm. This memorial is dedicated to
those who died in the attacks of
September 11, 2001, as well as those
who have since defended our nation
and our way of life, be they living or
dead. The United States Army will
always defend our nation and our
way of life against these and all
enemies. Let us never forget that day
or this pledge”.
The Air Force Academy memorial has a steel girder from the World Trade Center held by two pieces of marble that represent the Twin Towers. The base of the memorial is in the shape of a pentagon. Both memorials serve as reminders to those who died during the attack, first responders, the men and women who serve our country and their families.
