Celebrate what we all have inherited as Americans – 84 million acres of the world’s most spectacular scenery, historic landmarks and cultural treasures.  Visit the Great Sans Dunes National Park and Preserve, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site.

Bird Hike at Pinello Ranch

Please join local birder Charlie Campbell at Pinello Ranch for two guided outings identifying birds during spring migration. Pinello Ranch is one of several key areas that birds use as resting areas while migrating north along the Fountain Creek Flyway. The many ponds at Pinello Ranch are a special draw to waterfowl.

Highlights will include tips on identifying different species, learning about behavior and habitat needs as well as learning some bird songs.
Pre-registration is required. Register for April 28th or May 19th.

Pinello Ranch is located at 4940 S. Hwy 85/87, Colorado Springs, CO 80911 just just south of St. Dominic’s Church and Venetucci Farm.  From downtown Colorado Springs, take I-25 S to the S. Academy Blvd. exit 135. Turn left off the exit ramp. Soon afterwards, exit onto S. Hwy 85/87 towards Fountain. Pinello Ranch is the first driveway on your right.

Growing Fruit Trees in the Pikes Peak Region

Learn to grow fruit trees in the Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region at Pinello Ranch. Local backyard orchardist, James Kulbeth, will instruct class participants in the techniques of selecting, prepping, planting, transplanting, pruning, training, and maintaining fruit trees in the Pikes Peak Region. With a special focus on apple varieties, participants will have hands-on experience as they tend the Pinello Ranch apple orchard in its third spring. Fountain Community Night Out is on April 16

The 14th Annual Fountain Community Night Out presented by the City of Fountain will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012 at Fountain-Fort Carson High School  from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  In the cafeteria there will be information and display booths by local organizations.  Light snacks and refreshments will be provided by local restaurants.  At 6:00 pm Mayor Jeri C. Howells will welcome everyone to this years Fountain Community Night Out event. The Fountain-Fort Carson JROTC will Post the Colors.  Entertainment will be provided by the Fountain Fort Carson Trojanaires who will sing the National Anthem and the D.A.R.E Choir  from Jordahl Elementary will also be singing.  The guest speaker Mayor ProTem Gabe Ortega will then update us on plans for Fountain Creek, which is the theme for this years high school art contest.  Art Contest Winners of “Our Creek:  Fountain Creek: will be on display in the cafeteria and winners will be announced at the auditorium during the 6:00 program.

Recycle Toilet and Porcelain in El Paso County

Colorado Springs Utilities now crushes toilets and porcelain to use as road base to help reduce waste in landfills and to lower costs for buying new aggregate.  The new program is free which helps local residents reduce disposal costs and helps promote a more sustainable community.  Toilets, sinks and other porcelain are accepted at El Paso County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Please remove all plastics and metals before bringing them to El Paso County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility and plan on loading your own materials into the dumpster.  The toilet and porcelain recycle program launched on April 2, 2012.
