DENVER — May 27, 2016 — Whether enjoying a backyard barbecue or camping out, the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) reminds everyone to keep fire safety in mind this holiday weekend.
“Memorial Day weekend is a great time to be outdoors with family and friends, cooking and visiting around a campfire,” says DFPC Director Mike Morgan. “It doesn’t take much for a small fire to turn into a large blaze. Knowing a few fire safety tips will help ensure that everyone has a fire safe holiday weekend.”
Campfire Safety Tips
- Check local fire restrictions
- A 10-foot perimeter around the campfire should be clear of all flammable materials
- Never leave a campfire unattended at anytime
- Ensure all campfires are completely extinguished before leaving
Grilling Safety Tips
- Keep barbecue 5 to 10 feet away from your house or other flammable material
- Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors
- Keep children and pets away from the grill area
- Never leave your grill unattended at anytime
