With the increasing number of disabled war veterans returning home, there has been a notable increase in disabled parking complaints.

The Colorado Springs Police Department would like to remind everyone that a “Disabled Veteran” license plate does not entitle the driver to park in a designated disabled parking space.

In the state of Colorado, the only vehicles permitted to utilize a space designated for disabled parking are those displaying license plates with the wheelchair symbol in the center of the plate or vehicles displaying a valid disabled parking placard hanging on the rear view mirror.

There are many drivers who are truly mobility impaired and need those marked parking spaces to enable them easy access to businesses for medications, groceries and other needs.

Please be considerate and keep the spaces available for those in need of the space.   If you feel you qualify for the use of a disabled parking space, you can obtain the proper credentials for your vehicle through the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles.

As a reminder, the fine for parking in a handicapped parking space is $100.00.
