COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Ever wanted to try paddleboarding, kayaking, biking, fishing, slacklining, archery or shooting? These and other family-friendly activities will be offered for people to explore, for free, at Get Outdoors Day Colorado Springs on June 2 in Memorial Park.

The third annual event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is hosted by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the City of Colorado Springs, Mike Johnson Youth Hunting Project and the Pikes Peak Outdoor Recreation Alliance.

A variety of outdoor businesses and nonprofit agencies will have activities on display for the public to try. There will be two climbing walls for folks to scale. Would-be anglers can try fly fishing or spin casting. There will be mountain bikes and pedal-assisted electric bikes.

Maybe you want to learn about mapping. Or perhaps bird watching is more your style.

There will be a “touch a truck” area for kids to see and touch a variety of vehicles used by first responders. And U.S. Air Force Academy cadets will be there with falcons on their arms for a close look at live raptors from the AFA’s falconry program.

Learn about trail maintenance, bird watching and conservation. Play games and participate in scavenger hunts. Plus, the first 1,000 kids will receive a free fly fishing pole and water bottle from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

“Get Outdoors Day is part of our effort to encourage people to get outside and see all the beauty and fun our state has to offer,” said Frank McGee, CPW’s area wildlife manager for the Pikes Peak region.

McGee said the event builds on CPW’s mission to nurture deep connections between future generations of Coloradans and our natural resources, inspiring them to serve as stewards of our wildlife and wild places.

“The main idea is to encourage families to spend time outside and find new activities they can enjoy together,” McGee said. “At Get Outdoors Day, they can try a variety of activities they might have never considered before. Then they can go out on their own later and enjoy them.”

All demonstrations and activities are free and attendees can register to receive some great prizes from the participating businesses.
